How to Budget Your Time for the Self-Care You Need

Balancing a busy career with your own personal life is an ongoing challenge, and the pressure to perform at your best, take on big projects, and increase your productivity at work can leave you feeling drained once you’re home. The problem is, with the way that today’s world sees being constantly busy as a positive trait, there’s little time to invest in self-care. But when you’re constantly going at full speed without giving yourself time to recover, you’re setting yourself up for burnout. It’s impossible to do your best work and tackle big projects well when you’re stressed, exhausted, and […]

Simple Ways To Practice Prenatal Self Care

Pregnancy can be a stressful time. You’ve got doctor appointments to attend, ultrasounds, scans, and check-ups. You’re trying to get the nursery ready, decorated and fully stocked ahead of your new bundle of joy, all while you’re continuing on with your regular life, work, social activities. The whole nine months can be a whirlwind and at times you’ll feel as if you’ve blinked and just a few weeks from your due date. Other times you’ll feel as if time is dragging on. This is pretty normal and most pregnant women feel the same. That’s why keeping on top of your […]

It’s Okay To Give Yourself a Break

When work and deadlines are piling up, feeling overwhelmed can feel like a given. Sometimes it can feel as if we are expected to feel overloaded, that if we’re not rushing around at a million miles an hour and constantly glued to our phones then we’re not working hard enough, but this simply isn’t true. If things are feeling too much, read our tips on taking some down time, give yourself a break, and you’re sure to start to feel better. Too tired to tidy? Be Kind to Yourself

Most of us were raised believing that being kind to others is important. Are you kind to yourself too? Being kind to yourself doesn’t mean spending lots of money on new shoes or fancy jewelry – though if you can afford it, be my guest. I love a pair of fancy shoes as much as the next woman! Being kind to yourself is about doing the little things that make you feel strong and composed in the long run. Time to Relax Whether it’s hot baths, curling up with a good book, or going for a long run, make time for […]

Hey, Lady. You’re not Forgotten: the Importance of You

The post Hey, Lady. You’re not Forgotten: the Importance of You appeared first on Ms. Career Girl.

Do you know the safety drill of air stewards, “Put your mask on before assisting others”?  When it comes to taking care of everyone else, have you forgotten about you? Are you actually taking care of yourself at all? Or, did you forget to put your air mask on first? We are trained from a very early age that our role in the family is multifaceted. Often we are not only managing the many aspects of the household and budget, but also have kids with diverse interests and schedules that we wish to nurture and accommodate. When we add the […]

7 Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Day

The post 7 Easy Ways to Upgrade Your Day  appeared first on Ms. Career Girl.

The following is a guest post by Marissa Vicario.  Her bio follows.

Most people know how to keep their physical, emotional and mental well-being in check with self care, but few rarely give it the attention it deserves. In one study, only 6 percent of adults engaged in health-related self care each day. That means 94 percent of us aren’t taking the time we know we need to make self care a habit.

That number needs to change. I suspect it’s high because self-care seems like it needs to be another check-box on the to-do list, but that’s not true at all.

Excerpted from my new book, Your Holistically Hot Transformation: Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle Free of Dieting, Confusion and Self-Judgment, here’s quick list of everyday tasks that you can transform into self-care habits.

Cooking | Play with your food:

You know that eating nutritious food is a crucial part of taking care of yourself, but take it a step further. So often when we prepare our food we plop it onto a plate or eat it directly out of the paper takeout container because we’re in a rush. Try plating your food nicely then sitting down to it at a table with a nice place setting and maybe even a candle. You’ll change your entire dining experience this way.

Showering | Brush yourself dry:

Before you shower, why not take two minutes to use a dry brush to brighten and naturally detoxify your skin? It’s also invigorating! The rigid bristles of the brush stimulate below the surface of the skin to get blood flowing and promote healthy circulation.

Sleeping | Rest easier:

Diffuse essential oil in your bedroom while you sleep. My favorite is lavender. It calms you down so you can get a deeper, more restful sleep.

Dental Hygiene | Scrape your tongue:

Sounds gross, but keep reading. Tongue scraping is not only cleansing, but also stimulating and it goes that extra mile toward fighting plaque and keeping your breath fresh. It supposedly enhances kissing, too!  A tongue scraper is a metal U-shaped tool you can find at a health food store or even on Amazon. It’s used to remove excess bacteria and food build-up from the surface of the tongue.

Mid-day Re-charge | Sip a Hot Beverage:

Trade the coffee for your favorite hot tea or even hot water. Sipping plain hot water is hydrating, detoxifying and gives your immune and digestive systems a little boost. More gentle than coffee, tea is both calming and can help curb those afternoon sugar cravings. Take 15- 30 minutes out of your day to re-charge and for an added bonus, stay off your phone and computer.

Nighttime Relaxation | Face or Hair Mask:

Shut down the computer and give yourself some extra TLC with an extra-special beauty treatment like a face or hair mask. Pair it with a soak in a hot tub of Epsom salt and essential oil for maximum relaxation.

Daily Calendaring | Say Yes Less:

Most of us are over-scheduled. Make it a practice to give yourself more time by eliminating engagements that aren’t necessary or re-prioritizing them for a later date.

Nine Ways To Get True Beauty Sleep

The post Nine Ways To Get True Beauty Sleep appeared first on Ms. Career Girl.

It seems there’s never enough time to get to everything we’d like to do.  That includes the little extras that can help us stay healthy and younger looking.   So when I heard about these tips to promote better skin health while sleeping, I’m like all in.  Since we spend one fourth to one third of our lives sleeping, why not make it do double duty?

Dr. Kally Papantoniou, a Cosmetic Dermatologist, probably knows our skin better than we do.   And she’s found that most of us are not aware of how important sleep is to skin health.  She explains:

“ During sleep we heal, restore and eliminate toxins from the skin. If sleep is compromised, so is the body’s ability to carry out these essential skin functions. During the first three hours of sleep your body will start producing the human growth hormone from the pituitary gland. As we age, this hormone is necessary for the maintenance of youthful and radiant skin.  Without this hormone release, skin is not repaired from daily damage and thus induces the aging process.”

Here are her “ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” tools to help your skin rejuvenate while you sleep:

  1. Supplement Your Sleep

As we age, our bodies naturally produce less melatonin, which affect our skin’s ability to repair itself at night. If falling asleep is becoming more difficult, you may benefit from taking a melatonin supplement or using a topical product with melatonin to help combat decreased hormone levels. Melatonin works best if taken at night about 30 minutes before going to bed. This is when it serves its purpose, and helps to increase the depth and duration of restorative sleep. Restorative sleep, in turn helps accelerate and optimize the skin’s repair cycle, says Dr. Papantoniou.

  1. Cleanse Twice

Have you ever washed your makeup off before bed, yet mysteriously woken up with liner smudged under your eyes? Turns out that’s normal, especially if you used long-lasting makeup, which really does live up to its claim. Here’s why: 12 to 24-hour foundations, mascaras, eyeliners, and eye shadows are all made with polymers that don’t easily dissolve with soap and water, or water-based makeup remover.

Dr. Papantoniou says, “To really remove all traces of your makeup, take a cue from Korean skin care and wash your face twice using a method called “double cleansing.” First, use an oil-based cleanser to remove your makeup (the oil breaks down the waxes and polymers way more effectively than soap and water). You can purchase an oil based make-up remover for this or even use coconut oil on a Q-tip to gently remove more stubborn makeup. Then, use a gentle non-soap cleanser to rid your skin of any leftover residue. An example of a gentle cleanser is Vanicream’s Gentle Cleanser or CeraVe Facial Cleanser”

 Beauty sleep

  1. Moisturize

While you sleep, your skin naturally repairs and restores itself, and cleaning it before bed maximizes this effect. Dr. Papanatoniou points out that, “During the day, your skin fights off all sorts of assaults, from UV rays to pollution; at night, there’s less damage control to do, so the beauty products that you apply may be more effective. Applying night creams to clean skin in the evening is the best time to soften your face; not to mention, it can feel soothing and relaxing as you prep for sleep.”

  1. Put on a Sleep Mask

Overnight masks are a great way to treat your skin and give it extra attention,” says Dr. Papantoniou. The skin undergoes more cellular repair during sleep and can be more receptive to products at this time.” She recommends using an overnight mask a few times a week in lieu of going through your usual nighttime regimen. Simply cleanse, slather on a layer of the mask, and go to sleep.

  1. Keep Your Hair Off Your Face

Pull your hair back into a loose ponytail or wrap it in a scarf before going to bed. This will prevent the hair’s natural oils from rubbing off on your skin. This is especially important if your hair is unwashed or you are prone toward acne break outs.

  1. Get The Right Pillowcases

It’s worth it to invest in some soft pillowcases, because friction from harsher cotton fibers can accelerate the development of permanent creases. Dr. Papantoniou suggests trying a smooth silk or satin pillowcase, which prevents trauma to the skin and reduces the probability of your skin forming lines and wrinkles while you sleep. Also remember to change and wash your pillowcases at least once a week.

  1. Rejuvenate With a Retinoid

Choose an anti-age cream or serum that packs real power. These vitamin-a derivatives are key to youthful-looking skin. “But because exposure to sunlight can deactivate their potency, it’s best to apply retinoids at night,” says Dr. Papantoniou. Start by using an OTC retinol-containing cream or serum every other night until skin becomes more tolerant to the side effects, which are often dryness and sensitivity.

  1. Apply Eye Cream

If you are having problems with eye bags and puffiness after you wake up, applying eye cream before sleeping will solve this. Gently apply the cream around your eyes especially under it to replenish the skin surrounding your eyes. Make sure you stay hydrated during the day; this can help prevent water retention and will combat your sodium intake during the day.

  1. Mind Your Sleeping Position

Train yourself not to sleep face down. This habit can cause premature wrinkles and creases. It’s better to position yourself properly while sleeping. This will also prevent your face from rubbing against pillowcases and sheets. If you are lucky and can sleep on you back, that is the best way to prevent wrinkles and creases from sleep habits.

9 Ways to Start Investing in Yourself

The post 9 Ways to Start Investing in Yourself appeared first on Ms. Career Girl.

Women in their twenties often focus so much on pleasing their employers, significant others, family, or coworkers that they forget to invest much-needed time and resources in themselves. But focusing on yourself is the least risky investment you can make because it’s guaranteed to pay off — and often in ways more valuable than money. Going beyond the traditional definition of financial investing, these nine self-investments are worth the costs.

  1. Get a personal trainer.

Exercise helps reduce stress, improve self-confidence, sharpen memory, and boost overall health. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise (or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise) per week, supplemented with strength training. If you struggle with consistency, a personal trainer can provide motivation and support, while tailoring your exercise routines to meet your personal health goals.

  1. Replace your old mattress.

When you’re sleep deprived, you’re more likely to make risky financial decisions, experience higher levels of anxiety, and even gain weight. A good mattress is key for getting a good night’s sleep and, as a result, feeling happier and more rested. If you haven’t replaced your mattress in the last eight years, it’s time for a new one. Before you buy, though, test out a few different mattresses to find one that feels best for your body.

  1. Improve your home’s security.

While you probably think of your home as a safe place, it’s important to maximize that security as much as possible. Along with installing a home security system, sweep your home for any potential weak spots, like rusted door locks or old windows. If you’re technologically savvy, home automation makes it easy to secure and monitor your home. Avoid cutting corners here — your peace of mind is worth the expenses.

  1. Update your wardrobe to reflect your career.

In the business world, the saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover” doesn’t always hold true. While your specific dress code will depend on your industry, the way you dress should reflect your professionalism and dedication to your position. Leave the jeans and t-shirts for the weekend, and invest in a few tailored pieces for work, such as blazers, pencil skirts, slacks, blouses, and conservative heels.

  1. Work with a career coach.

Are you uncertain about what you want from your career, feeling dissatisfied with your industry, or struggling to define your dream job? A career coach can help you gain confidence, inspiration, and insight into your current or desired career. Even if you’re satisfied with your job, your coach can provide guidance on when to move for a promotion, how to negotiate salary increases, and where to find opportunities for growth.

  1. Meet with a nutritionist.

What you eat and drink affects both your mind and body. While most people understand the value of maintaining a healthy diet, a nutritionist takes things one step further by evaluating what foods and types of exercise work best for your body specifically. A nutritionist can help you establish a meal plan and set long-term health goals. By understanding what nutrients your body needs, you can feel more energetic and productive.

  1. Attend a professional conference.

Whether you work in marketing or are passionate about starting your own business, there are professional conferences geared toward a variety of industries. While conference entrance fees and travel costs can be expensive, the experience will pay dividends. You’ll have the chance to network with fellow professionals in your line of work, learn from the experts, improve your skills, and connect with potential future employers and coworkers.

  1. Experience the world through travel.

Don’t look at travel as a nonessential expense — think of it as a necessary life investment. There’s no substitute for real experience. Exploring the world allows you to learn about new cultures, meet people with different worldviews, discover your passions in life, and develop respect and love for the places you visit.

  1. Transition from renting to owning.

Don’t assume homeownership isn’t achievable if you aren’t making a three-figure paycheck yet. Recent studies show that it’s 23 percent cheaper to buy a home than to rent one, and millennials are currently dominating the housing market, constituting nearly 70 percent of first-time homebuyers. Allocate some extra resources to build your credit and savings so you can secure a competitive mortgage loan interest rate and afford a 20 percent down payment — and do it sooner rather than later.

As you navigate your career path, balance your financial investments with personal ones. From improving your well-being to learning new professional skills, commit yourself to making a few self-investments this year and see how they impact your life.
