North Dakota: Why you need to go!

Going someplace new is exciting, it can be a real thrill. I honestly look at it as an adventure. I’m like that dude from those old eighties films, except I’m navigating public transport, not jungles and I’m aiming to find a great hidden bar or club rather than a priceless jewel. Not that I wouldn’t be OK with that, but it’s not my main goal!

But what if you aren’t like me. I mean, have you ever just taken out a map, pointed at a place and decided ‘Hey, I just have to visit there?’” No? Well don’t worry about it, most other people haven’t either and although I love my way of traveling, I can also see why it might not appeal to most people, especially those short on time or those who just don’t like getting lost.

So, do you visit the same old places year after year? Well, you could, I guess. There’s nothing wrong with the road well-traveled, but if you’re looking for somewhere new and exciting and don’t want to do all the groundwork yourself, keep reading while I introduce you to North Dakota.

Never been to North Dakota? Here’s your chance to see why you should go. If you’ve been there before, let me reintroduce you to some awesome places to visit.

It’s a great place for those of us who thrive on outdoor activities. You won’t be shy of choice, whether it’s hiking, canoeing, golfing, biking, fishing, camping or something else – the Lewis and Clark Trail is well worth the visit – the list really does go on.

There are also some amazing historical landmarks, especially Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

If you’re looking for Native American culture, you’ll find it at Knife River Indian Villages, where you’ll find a reconstructed and furnished Hidatsa earthlodge, 15 miles of trails and a museum.

Medora, meanwhile, is a tribute to the state’s western culture. It has a museum dedicated to my personal favourite – and if we’re honest, most guys’ favourite – American icon: the cowboy. North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame is where you’ll find stories of Native Americans, ranchers and rodeo riders who called or call North Dakota home.

If it’s wildlife you seek, I can assure you it is in North Dakota. Take the Maah Daah Hey Trail, for instance. Wildlife like bison, coyote, fox, eagles, deer and more can been seen on the trail connecting the south and north units of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. This 140-mile trail over rolling prairies and rocky Badlands is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including mule deer, coyotes, golden eagles, bighorn sheep and bison.

If art, culture and nightlife is more your thing, then you won’t be disappointed … I wasn’t. If you’re anything like me, you’re going to need to set aside some decent time to fit in all the sights and sounds of this great state. Although you won’t be setting off with only a dusty map to show you the way, it will still feel like an adventure!
